How I Fell in Love with Candle-Making
Share
I don’t know about you, but I’ve always had a soft spot for beautiful scents. If something smells lush, that’s it for me. Perfumes, oils, fabric softeners, even just walking past a bakery or a flower stall, it instantly lifts my mood. So really, it’s no surprise that I fell in love with the world of scented candles and wax melts.
It all started very simply. Just me, a bit of wax, a few fragrance oils, and a curious mind. At first, I thought it would be easy. Melt the wax, mix in the scent, pour, and done. But I soon realised there’s an art to it. Every little detail matters: the temperature, the wax type, the timing, how it cures, and of course, the testing. I’ve melted the same batch more times than I can count, just to see if the scent would release evenly or fill the room the way I imagined.
Even with all the mistakes, and there have been plenty, I’ve loved every moment.
My little studio is just a converted spare room. Nothing fancy, but it’s my calm space. Most days, it smells like a mix of vanilla, citrus, soft florals, or whatever I’m blending that day. The air always carries a quiet fragrance, warm and inviting, like a soft hug. People have told me it smells like heaven, and honestly, I take that as the best compliment in the world.

My children and pretty much everyone I know will tell you the same thing. For as long as they can remember, if it was Christmas or my birthday, I was getting a scented candle. It was always a safe bet. But now they don’t need to buy me any. My shelves are lined with candles and melts I’ve made myself, and I love every single one.
What excites me most is the feeling each scent can bring. Fragrance has this quiet power to stir memories, calm the mind, or simply make a home feel peaceful. When I’m blending a new scent, I often imagine the person who might use it. Maybe they’ll light it after a long day or smile because it reminds them of somewhere they love. That thought alone makes all the effort worth it.
I’m still learning, still exploring, and still finding my rhythm. But every small victory, whether it’s a perfect burn, a smooth finish, or seeing someone smile after smelling one of my melts, makes my heart full.
If you’ve been thinking about starting something just because it brings you joy, I say go for it. Don’t wait for perfect. Learn as you go. That’s where the beauty really is.
Thank you for being here with me while I figure it all out. I’m so excited to keep growing, creating, and sharing this journey with you.
With love and calm scents,
Mylin x
