Why I Choose Coconut and Rapeseed Wax for Casa De Lumière
Share
When I first started making candles, I honestly didn’t think too deeply about which wax I should use. I was more focused on getting the fragrance right and making something that looked and felt special. As time went on and Casa De Lumière grew, I learned how much the choice of wax affects the way a candle burns, how clean it is and the values behind the product itself. That’s what eventually brought me to coconut and rapeseed wax, which has now become the base of all my candles.

Coconut wax is made from the flesh of the coconut, and rapeseed wax comes from the oil of the rapeseed plant. Both are natural and renewable, and together they create a soft, creamy blend. It melts at a lower temperature, which helps the scent release in a smooth and gentle way. A lot of people tell me my candles don’t hit them suddenly but slowly fill the room, and that’s because of this wax blend.
I also think about the environmental side of things. Coconut and rapeseed can be grown in a more controlled and sustainable way, especially compared to the large scale farming linked with some soy production. They’re biodegradable and not tied to the heavy carbon footprint of paraffin. Using them feels like a more responsible choice for my little brand and the kind of products I want to put out into the world.
Another thing I noticed during testing is how clean the burn is. Coconut and rapeseed wax produce very little soot, which is important for people who light candles to relax or create a peaceful space. If the candle burns cleanly, it supports that atmosphere instead of working against it.
The growing process also matters. Coconut trees don’t need a lot of water or chemicals, and rapeseed is considered one of the more efficient crops here in Europe. It feels good knowing the materials behind my candles come from crops that don’t strain the environment as heavily.
And then there’s the simple experience of using the candle. This wax burns slowly and evenly, and that steady flame helps the fragrance stay consistent from the first burn to the last. During testing, I kept noticing how tidy the melt pool formed and how reliable the throw was. It fits the quiet, refined feel I want my products to have.
My choice of wax isn’t something I landed on quickly. It came from research, a lot of trial and error and wanting to create something that feels good to use, inside and out. This blend supports the kind of quality I’m proud of and the more thoughtful approach behind Casa De Lumière.
