Fragrance Oils vs Essential Oils
Share
When I first started learning about candle and wax melt making, I assumed essential oils were the most natural and sustainable option, and that fragrance oils were something to avoid if you cared about the planet. It turns out the reality is far more nuanced.
If you’ve ever thought the same, you’re not alone.
What are essential oils?
Essential oils are extracted from plants using methods such as steam distillation, cold pressing, or solvent extraction. The aim is to capture the natural aroma of the plant itself.
They are natural, but natural does not always mean sustainable.
Some essential oils require huge amounts of plant material to produce a very small quantity of oil. In certain cases, this can place real pressure on land use, water consumption, and biodiversity. Availability also depends on harvests, climate, and geography, which can make consistency difficult.
In home fragrance, many essential oils also come with safety limitations. Some have very low usage limits, others aren’t suitable for burning at all, and many contain allergens that must be carefully managed under UK and EU regulations.
Essential oils can absolutely be eco-conscious when responsibly sourced and used correctly, but they are not automatically the greener option.
What are fragrance oils?
Fragrance oils are blends of aroma molecules created by fragrance chemists. Some molecules are synthetic, some are nature-identical, and some may include small amounts of natural components.
The key thing to understand is that “synthetic” does not automatically mean harmful or unsustainable.
In fact, many fragrance molecules are designed to recreate natural scents without the need to harvest large quantities of plants. This can significantly reduce environmental impact, especially for scents that would otherwise rely on rare flowers, slow-growing trees, or intensive farming.
High-quality fragrance oils are:
- Formulated to meet strict IFRA safety standards
- Consistent and stable in candles and wax melts
- Often biodegradable and designed to break down safely
- Created to perform well at lower usage levels
When you look at the full picture, fragrance oils can be a very responsible and sustainable choice.
So, are fragrance oils eco-friendly?
They can be, and often are, when chosen carefully.
Sustainability isn’t about whether something is natural or synthetic. It’s about how it’s sourced, how it’s produced, how it’s used, and its overall impact on people and the planet.
At Casa De Lumière, we use high-quality, IFRA-compliant fragrance oils alongside a plant-based rapeseed and coconut wax. This combination allows us to create scents that are consistent, safe to enjoy at home, and more mindful of environmental impact than relying solely on natural extracts.
A thoughtful balance
There’s no single perfect answer when it comes to sustainability. It’s about balance, transparency, and making informed choices.
Choosing fragrance oils doesn’t mean compromising eco-values. In many cases, it’s a conscious decision to reduce pressure on natural resources while still creating beautiful, long-lasting home fragrance.
If you ever have questions about ingredients, sustainability, or how products are made, those conversations truly matter. Curiosity is how we all make better choices.
With love,
